Police take armed man into custody at RiverPlace parking garage
UPDATE • Man held in jail on menacing charge
Portland police took an armed man into custody Friday afternoon after he refused to leave a parking garage utility room near the RiverPlace Marina.
Police said 46-year-old Jamy Patrick Collet surrendered after two canisters of tear gas were tossed into the room.
Collet was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on one count of menacing. Additional charges may follow.
Crisis negotiators and the city's Special Emergency Reaction Team were called at noon Friday to the parking garage on Southwest Montgomery Street between River Drive and Harbor Way.
Witnesses said a man who was acting strange approached three people in the garage with a knife. After police were called, the man went into a utility room and refused to leave.
The standoff lasted about two hours.
