September rainfall records shattered

September rainfall records across the region and state were shattered during the heavy storms that closed out the month.

Records fell Portland, Astoria, Eugene, Hillsboro, McMinnville, Salem and Vancouver, Wash. Some of them dated back to 1874, according to Steve Pierce, president of the Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorological Society.

For example, the National Weather Service reported 6.44 inches of rain fell in downtown Portland, compared to the most recent record of 5.52 set in September 1927 and the average of 1.54 inches.

Hillsboro recorded 6.27 inches of rain in September, compared to the most recent record of 3.68 inches in 1945 and the average of 1.26 inches.

Pierce says those interested in weather forecasts for the coming months should attend the 21st annual Winter Weather Forecast Conference sponsored by the AMS at at 10 a.m. on Oct. 26 at OMSI. Admission is free.

"With neither El Nino or La Nina present across the Pacific Ocean, will the Pacific Northwest see more record setting weather to come? Don't miss this meeting," says Pierce.
