Driver arrested in St. Johns Bridge bike crash
Portland police have arrested a 58-year-old Hillsboro man on drunk-driving charges after a Friday evening collision on the St. Johns Bridge that injured a 23-year-old bicycle rider.
Police said Stephen Varney Schwartz was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, third-degree assault and third-degree criminal mischief.
James Fallon-Cote of North Portland was injured at about 6:22 p.m. when the bike he was riding west across the bridge was struck by a truck driven by Schwartz. The collision knocked Fallon-Cote onto the hood and windshield of the truck.
He was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
