The Portland Police Bureau has terminated Officer Dane Reister
Reister was notified of the termination on Tuesday, Oct. 15. It was publicly announced the next day.
The termination stems from a June 30, 2011, incident where Reister fired lethal rounds rather than less lethal shotgun rounds at William Monroe, critically injuring him.
"This has been a long and thorough investigation, which had complexities due to the pending criminal charges," said Chief Michael Reese. "The events of June 30th devastated the lives of those involved, but we hope that this action will bring some sense of closure."
The city settled a federal lawsuit filed by Monroe's family for $2.3 million in April 2013
Reister was terminated for violations of Portland Police Bureau Directive 315.30 (Unsatisfactory Performance) and Directive 1050.00 (Less Lethal Weapons and Munitions).
