City agency enlists 'entrepreneur in residence' to help startups

Portland Development Commission has enlisted the services of Jive Software co-founder Bill Lynch as an “entrepreneur-in-residence.”

Lynch will advise the city urban renewal and economic development agency — without compensation — on its efforts to promote startup businesses in the city.

“Bill really has an interest in giving back to the startup community,” says Jared Wiener, PDC’s software industry liaison.

The arrangement is the first of its kind for PDC, which has expanded its role in promoting startups and young companies since the Great Recession started in 2008.

Lynch often meets with local companies and sometimes invests in them, Wiener says.

“I’m excited to work with the PDC to find ways to help Portland startups thrive,” Lynch says. “There has been a lot of positive growth in the last several years and I hope to do what I can to continue this trend.”

“Bill Lynch is a brilliant startup strategist who is already jumping right in with bright ideas to amp up Portland’s entrepreneurial ecosystem,” says Patrick Quinton, PDC’s executive director.

PDC inked a memorandum of understanding with Lynch to formalize the relationship, but there are few details, Wiener says, as his role is likely to evolve as the city seeks to tap his expertise. One avenue the city might pursue is using its purchasing power to help kickstart startups, Wiener says. For example, the city Water Bureau was one of the first customers of Lucid Energy, which taps hydro power from moving water inside pipes.
