Big bill for water main break

by: KOIN NEWS 6 - Workers inspect 100-year-old water main that broke near Old Town on Oct. 29, flooding streets and closing businesses around SW 4th and Burnside. The break of a 100-year-old water main near Old Town cost the city $165,000 to repair it.

The main at Southwest 4th Avenue and West Burnside Street broke October 29, flooding businesses and cars in the area. Traffic was disrupted for more than a week.

The 24-inch diameter cast iron pipe along Burnside was installed in 1913. Officials said age was likely a factor in the break.

Many sewer pipes in the city have been replaced, but many more are reaching that 100 year breaking point. The City of Portland previously spent about $10 million a year on replacement work and plan on spending $20 million to 25 million a year over the next few years.
