Portland teachers honored by state, national groups

Four PPS teachers took the spotlight with outstanding achievements this past month:

• Alfonso Garcia, a middle grades Science teacher at ACCESS Academy, was named Oregon's Outstanding Classroom Science Teacher at the Oregon Science Teachers' Association conference in October.

• Irvington K-8 language arts and social studies teacher Todd Stewart-Rinier was presented with the Summit Learning and Teaching Award in October at Pacific Educational Group’s National Summit for Courageous Conversation in St. Louis.

• The United States Tennis Association has chosen Deanne Larsell, Benson Tennis Coach and a Laurelhurst teacher, for the USTA's No-Cut Coach All-Star Team 2013. Only 12 coaches nationwide are recognized with this honor for implementing a "no cut" policy and welcoming all interested students to be part of their school's tennis team.

• Buckman second grade teacher Dawn Roberts saved a child from choking during classtime this month. She pulled the child to the sink, performed the Heimlich maneuver and got the child to cough up the food. Buckman Principal Brian Anderson called Roberts "a perfect example of a teacher who always puts her students and their safety first,” that she’s “in this profession to make a difference for students and this proves it is not just about academics."
