City sick leave ordinance takes effect this week
Most people working in the city of Portland are now eligible for sick leave, and they may no longer be fired simply for being too ill to work or when they need to stay home with a sick child.
The city of Portlands mandatory sick time ordinance took effect on Jan. 1. It applies to most employers in the city and even includes people who work part of the year inside the city limits.
The ordinance guarantees most workers the right to earn one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked.

Advocates for guaranteed sick leave hope to get the Oregon Legislature to enact a statewide law, but started out by lobbying the city to pass an ordinance last year.
