Washington County woman dies after being hit by pickup truck

A woman was killed when she was struck by a pick up truck as she was crossing SW Elwert Road in rural Washington County on Monday evening.

Joan Deyoung-Burklund, 62, was crossing the road in front of her house to go to her mail box when she was struck by a pickup truck.

The driver of the truck, Wesley Crockett, 30, of Forest Grove did not see her until the last moment and stayed at the scene until Washington County Sheriff's deputies arrived shortly before 6 pm. Crockett is not being charged at this time.

Members of the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to investigate the crash. After talking to witnesses and investigating the crash scene, their preliminary investigation determined that Crockett was driving his pick up truck north on SW Elwert Road near SW Schroeder Lane. This is an unlit, rural county road, with a speed limit of 55 miles per hour. According to the driver of the car directly behind Crocket, he was driving in a normal manner, at or below the speed limit.

Crockett was not able to see Deyoung-Burklund until the last second and although he tried to swerve to avoid her, he stuck her with the right-front side of his truck. He called 911 along with another driver who witnessed the crash. Investigators are speculating that Deyoung-Burklund was crossing the street to get the mail from her mailbox when she was struck.
