A 46-year-old man died Thursday evening when he was struck by a vehicle in the 17300 block of Southeast Division Street.

Portland police said the man died at about 8:34 p.m. Jan. 30. Police officers and medical personnel were unable to save the man’s life.

Portland police said Angelo Elton Tupper was struck by a white 2013 Mercedes C250 driven by 43-year-old Ted Chu in Division Street’s eastbound right lane. Chu remained at the scene and cooperated in the investigation.

Police said Tupper was lying in the road and Chu was unable to avoid him. Police were unsure why Tupper was in the road. Investigators were told that Tupper was at a nearby lounge prior to the accident. They are still looking into the cause of Tupper’s death.

Southeast Division Street was closed for about three hours as officers investigated the crash.

It was the first traffic fatality of 2014.
