City Hall celebrates Year of the Horse

The United Chinese Association of Oregon hosted a ceremony Friday afternoon at City Hall to mark the new year.

Mayor Charlie Hales, state Rep. Jeff Barker of Aloha and Chinese Deputy Consul General Yi Xian Rong joined a large audience as they watched a lion dance as part of the Jan. 31 celebration in the City Hall atrium.

The Year of the Horse, one of the 12-year cycle of animals that appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar, is characterized by the qualities of cheerfulness, charm, loyalty, friendliness, ambition, independence, high energy and introspection.

Friday celebration also marked the 35th anniversary of the China-U.S. Diplomatic Ties Agreement, which officially established diplomatic ties between the two nations.
