Slide closes I-84 at Troutdale
A landslide in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 near Hood River has forced the closure of the freeway beginning at Troutdale, exit 17.
The closure is impacting traffic flow this morning, Thursday, Feb. 13, as Oregon Department of Transportation crews work to clear the debris from the roadway and to evaluate the risk of an additional slide.
No time frame has been set for reopening.
During the closure, traffic is being diverted off I-84 at Troutdale. Motorists who are heading east have two options:
Cross the Glenn Jackson Bridge (Interstate 205) into Washington state, and take Highway 14 east along the Columbia River. You can cross the Columbia at Hood River and reconnect with I-84.
Take Highway 26 east out of Gresham and over Mount Hood, then follow Highway 35 north to Hood River and reconnect with I-84.
The slide happened at milepost 61, about a mile west of Hood River. About 2,000 cubic yards of debris fell from the hillside on the south side of the road and forced the closure of both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane.
One motorist escaped without injury after his car crashed into several large boulders at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. That person's name is not available.
