Two arrested in Saturday's hit-and-run death

by: COURTESY OF MCSO - JAY TAYLOR JENKINSPortland Traffic Division investigators have arrested 24-year-old Jay Taylor Jenkins in connection with Saturday night’s fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 60-year-old Portland man at Southeast 124th Avenue and Powell Boulevard.

Jenkins, also known as “Junebug,” was charged with second-degree manslaughter, failure to perform the duties of a driver (hit and run), tampering with physical evidence and obstructing governmental administration.

Also arrested Feb. 17 was Jerin Nigel Crabtree, 29, who police believe was helping Jenkins repair damage to his vehicle. Crabtree was charged with tampering with physical evidence.

Jenkins and Crabtree were booked into the Multnomah County Jail and will be arraigned on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Police allege that Jenkins was the driver of a 1995 Subaru station wagon that struck and killed Douglas Norman Miller at about 6:26 p.m. on Feb. 15 on Southeast Powell Boulevard at 124th Avenue. Miller died at the scene.

Miller’s death was Portland’s third fatal crash of 2014.

According to witnesses, a silver vehicle — possibly a minivan — struck Miller and then fled. Powell Boulevard was closed in both directions from 122nd to 126th avenues for several hours during the investigation.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, investigators acted on a tip and at about 11: 30 p.m. they went to a home in the area of Southeast 141st Avenue and Center Street. There they found the suspect vehicle in the fatal hit and run. Jenkins and Crabtree were arrested a short time later.
