by: COURTESY OF PFR - One man died Thursday, April 10, in a fire that damaged a Southwest 61st Avenue home. Firefighters were confronted by piles of clutter when they went into the house to find the victim.An elderly man died Thursday afternoon in a Southwest Portland house fire.

Portland Fire and Rescue officials said the body of the man was found by firefighters in the home at 10931 S.W. 61st Ave. shortly before 1 p.m. April 10.

The man’s name was not released.

Firefighters were called to the house at about 12:48 p.m. after reports of heavy fire and smoke coming from the dwelling. Firefighters went inside to look for possible victims, but were stymied by piles of clutter and trash. Several neighbors tried to run into the house to rescue the man, but were driven back by the flames.

The fire is under investigation.
