After years of cuts, Portland Public Schools is facing an historic hiring spree, looking to fill 350 to 400 positions.

To reach candidates, PPS is looking inside and outside Oregon. District recruiters have gone to Texas, New Mexico, California and Washington.

In addition to Skyping with candidates and promoting openings on the Internet, PPS is hosting — for the first time in 10 years — its own job fair Wednesday, April 16, at Marshall High School.

More than 125 candidates have scheduled interviews during the event, but walk-ins are welcome.

Two weeks ago, Superintendent Carole Smith presented her proposed budget for the 2014-15 school year.

The $534 million general fund budget adds more than 180 staff positions, including 70 in K-8 schools, 50 in high schools and 30 in special education.

Those additions would reduce staffing ratios and teacher workloads across the district.
