Rolland Hayden has been named as the next principal of Gordon Russell Middle School in Gresham.

“Rolland excels at shared leadership and makes building strong relationships with students and families a priority,” Gresham-Barlow School District Superintendent Jim Schlachter said in a news release.

Hayden has worked as the curriculum assistant principal at North Salem High School in the Salem-Keizer School District since 2010. He replaces outgoing Gordon Russell Principal Bruce Schmidt, who will serve as principal of Sam Barlow High School next year.

Prior to becoming an administrator, Hayden taught at Claggett Creek Middle School for seven years, specializing in middle school choir and teaching in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program.

Hayden’s choirs won numerous awards and honors, including placing first at the Best In The Northwest Choir Festival. During his tenure at Claggett Creek Middle School, he coached football, wrestling and track.

Hayden also was a member of Salem-Keizer’s district technology team, helping develop new ways for teachers to easily access student data. He is a certified trainer for data teams.

In 2010, Hayden was honored with the Apple for the Teacher Award from The Standard-Examiner Newspapers in Education Program.

Hayden holds a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in education from Portland State University. He earned his administrative license from Willamette University.
