Police, officials honor K-9 Mick at Hillsboro ceremony

by: TRIBUNE PHOTO: JAIME VALDEZ - Portland Police Bureau Officer Jeff Dorn hugs his family wife Sarah and two sons, Mitchell, 12, and Jackson, 11, after Dorn said a spoke during a public tribute honoring the service of the bureau's canine officer, Mick, at Hillsboro Stadium. The public and Portland police officers paid tribute Monday morning to K-9 officer Mick, the Police Bureau dog killed last month in the line of duty.

The tribute at Hillsboro Stadium included a speech by Mick's handler and partner, Portland Officer Jeff Dorn, who was wounded in the April 16 shootout in Southwest Portland with a fleeing burglary suspect.

Three suspects have been arrested and charged with several crimes related to the early morning incident.

Speeches also were made by Portland Mayor and Police Commissioner Charlie Hales, Police Chief Mike Reese and Heidi Moawad, Gov. John Kitzhaber's public safety adviser, who spoke on the governor's behalf.

The tribute is also expected to be attended by police K-9 teams from throughout the region. Hondo Dog Park, next to Hillsboro Stadium, will be reserved for the exclusive use of K-9 teams attending the tribute on Monday morning. For safety's sake, no other animals will be allowed into the stadium, except for service animals.

Tax-deductible donations can be sent to the Portland K-9 Unit at 4735 E. Burnside St., Portland 97215.

The city's federal tax identification number is 93-6002236, and there is an official notice on the city auditor's website if a donor wishes to print it for his or her records: www.portlandoregon.gov/auditor/article/38071
