Four honored as Portland area's 'Fathers of the Year'

Lynn Gust, Donald Krahmer, Chris McGowan and Charles Wilhoite recognized at Moda Center event


Four community-minded Portland-area men were honored on Wednesday night at the Moda Center as the 2014 “Fathers of the Year.”

The annual awards presented by the Portland chapter of the American Diabetes Association are intended to recognize men who have made family a priority while balancing careers and community involvement. This year’s honorees were: Lynn Gust, president of Fred Meyer Stores; Donald L. Krahmer Jr., a shareholder at the Schwabe, Williamson and Wyatt a law firm; Chris McGowan, president and chief executive officer of the Portland Trail Blazers; and Charles Wilhoite, a managing director of Willamette Management Associates.

The event, emceed this year by KPAM 860’s Mark Mason and Dave Anderson, also serves as a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association.

The recognition ceremony included videos about each of the four fathers, along with a summary of their extensive community activities.

As president at Fred Meyer, Gust heads up a division of the Kroger Co., one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States.

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - LYNN GUSTA Vancouver, Wash., native, he started his career with Fred Meyer as a parcel clerk at the Fourth Plain store in 1970. He served in a variety of leadership roles and in 2006 was named executive vice president of corporate merchandising and advertising. He was appointed Fred Meyer's president in 2013.

Gust is past chair and a current member of the board of directors of the Randall Children’s Hospital Foundation at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. He is also past president and chairman and a current member of the board of directors of the Western Association of Food Chains, past chair and board member of the Northwest Grocery Association and past member of the Portland State University FILC Advisory Board.

Gust and his wife, Julie, have four grown children: Emily, Andrew, Kaitlyn and Olivia.

Krahmer was described during the program as “one of Portland's most influential and connected leaders.” He has held a number of high-profile posts, from past presidency of the Arlington Club to current seats on the boards of Pacific by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - DONALD KRAHMER JR.Continental Bank, the Portland Business Alliance and Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon. He has served as an advisor to the Oregon Innovation Council since its creation.

This Hillsboro native was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1989. He and his wife Suzanne have two children: Hillary and Zachary.

In addition to being a managing director of Willamette Management Associates, Wilhoite is national director of the firm’s tax-exempt entity and health care services practice.

He was recently appointed a trustee of Meyer Memorial Trust, serves on the regional board for US Bank, and currently by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - CHARLES WILHOITEserves on several nonprofit boards, including Portland State University Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and Jesuit High School. He is past chair of Oregon Health Sciences University’s board, the Portland Business Alliance, the Portland Development Commission, the Urban League of Portland and the Oregon Children’s Foundation (SMART).

A graduate of Arizona State University, he and wife Tammy have three children, DeVaughn, Hadley and Dorsey. They reside in Northwest Portland.

Named president of the Trail Blazers and the Moda Center in October 2012, McGowan migrated to the Pacific Northwest from Los Angeles-based AEG Sports, where he spent 16 years. His final assignment at AEG was as chief by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - CHRIS McGOWANoperating officer, before he became one of the NBA’s youngest CEOs.

In his previous role as COO of AEG Sports, McGowan oversaw the business operations of the NHL’s 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and the 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup Champion Los Angeles Galaxy, while also assisting with operations for all of AEG’s sports teams worldwide.

McGowan was named to the Portland Metropolitan Boys & Girls Club’s Board of Governors in January 2013. He serves as a board member for the Oregon Business Council, Oregon Sports Authority and the Young Presidents Organization — Evergreen Chapter. McGowan also serves on the Advisory Council for the Sports Business Institute in the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business.

He and his wife Susan, and their two sons, Ryan and Kyle, reside in Southwest Portland.
