Rainier officer wounded; suspect on the run
A Rainier police officer was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the hand, Monday during an attempted traffic stop along Highway 30 near the Rainier city limits.
The shooting happened on Highway 30 near Veterans Way as the officer tried to stop the driver for driving erratically and aggressively through the Scappoose area, Columbia River Fire and Rescue Chief Jay Tappan told KOIN 6 News.
The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not injured by the shot to the chest, Tappan said. He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center for treatment of his injury. The officers name and medical condition have not been released.
The suspect fled west along the road.
The Clackamas County Sheriffs Office tweeted that the suspects vehicle is a red Kia Spectra with a Washington license plate of AMN-5227. The suspect is a white man with dark hair wearing a white T-shirt.
The search for the suspect is centered in Clatskanie. The Portland police said an air support unit is assisting in the case.
Tappan said the officer who was shot is one of the long-term folks around here.
