Zenger Farm, Burgerville team to promote vegetables
Youths will get free seeds when buying meals
Children's meals purchased at Burgerville will come with free seed packets, in a promotion cosponsored by Zenger Farm now through the end of May.
Seeds will include cucumbers, snap peas, carrots and nasturtiums, along with an illustrated wooden plant stake and a Zenger Farm activity bag.
Burgerville will ask kids to find old yogurt containers or milk cartons to plant the seeds, rather than provide biodegradable plastic pots, as done in past promotions.
'It all starts with a seed,' says Jill Kuehler, Zenger Farm executive director. 'When kids plant, tend and harvest vegetables, they are more inclined to eat them.'
Zenger Farm is a nonprofit urban farm that offers educational programs in East Portland. Burgerville is a Vancouver-based chain of 38 fast-food restaurants known for its commitment to local and sustainable foods.
