Starting Thursday, city officials will begin enforcing penalties for noise violations along Northeast Alberta Street during the Last Thursday events, because of longstanding complaints from neighbors and businesses.

City noise control officers will attend the Last Thursday event and plan to allow musicians to play music loud enough to reach 125 feet, while the audibility standard outlined in the Portland city code remains 100 feet.

An additional officer will also be at the event to talk with musicians and DJs about the noise rules. Musicians who fail to heed warnings will be cited and could face a $250 penalty.

The announcement comes after community members asked that the monthly event on Alberta be held to the same legal standards as other street festivals throughout the year.

City officials will also enforce a new 9 p.m. end time, which they instituted last month.
