Officer hurt in head-on crash

Car being chased hits patrol car, suspect flees

A Portland police officer was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries Friday afternoon afternoon after his patrol car was struck by a car he was pursuing.

Police are still looking for the suspect, described as a white man who was driving a lowered 1990s Honda Accord 4-door, with oxidized reddish/purple paint.

According to police, at approximately 1:52 p.m., officers saw the Honda speeding north on Southeast 84th Avenue near Flavel Street. Officers followed the vehicle south on Southeast 82nd Avenue as it attempted to drive away.

Officers pursued the vehicle onto Westbound Malden Street, when the driver of the suspect vehicle did a quick u-turn, sped back toward the officers' vehicles, hit the front of a patrol car and then sped away southbound on 82nd Avenue.

The officers continued to pursue for a short distance but then broke off the pursuit.

Two police officers were in the car at the time of the crash. The driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Portland police and Clackamas County sheriff's deputies checked the area during the afternoon but were unable to find the car or the driver.
