Two people were wounded in separate weekend shootings in Portland. A third person was also injured with a shovel during one of the incidents.
The suspect in the first incident was arrested after he turned himself in. He is Shelby Lee Kyles, 35, who is charged with Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
Kyles is accused of shooting Jose Lopez-Mathison, 26, in the leg and injuring Jose Cardenas, 28, in the head with a shovel.
Police found the injured men when at 6:08 on Saturday, July 12, when North Precinct officers responded to a residence in the 6100 block of Northeast Ainsworth Street on the report of a shooting. The injuries to both men were described as non-life threatening.
Kyles left the scene before police arrived. He surrendered at 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning at Southeast 147th Avenue and Burnside Street.
Police do not believe the incident was gang-related.
The suspect and victim in the second incident have not been identified. Police say at 12:44 a.m. on Sunday, July 13, North Precinct and Gang Enforcement Team officers responded to North Interstate Avenue and Killingsworth Street on the report of a shooting.
When the officers arrived, they located a male adult victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the buttocks. He was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers canvassed the area and located a crime scene. Based on witness information, the shooting was determined to be gang-related so the Gang Enforcement Team took over the investigation.
