Missing girl found safe three miles from home
Portland police said a 9-year-old Southeast Portland girl returned home safely Wednesday evening, a couple hours after her mother reported her missing.
A passerby found Mary Hinika walking near Northeast 162nd Avenue and San Rafael Drive, about three miles north of her home.
Police said Mary might have wandered away from the neighborhood near her home in the 3000 block of Southeast 171st Drive. Her mother reported her missing at about 7:15 p.m. Jan. 6. She was last seen at about 7:45 p.m. at a neighborhood market near Southeast 174th Avenue and Division Street.
Mary was wearing a pink and white robe, pink and white pajamas, pink shoes and a pink backpack.
Officers from East Precinct, the Transit Police Division, Traffic Division and the Gresham Police Department searched from Southeast 162nd to 182nd avenues, and from Powell Boulevard to Stark Street. The Portland Police Air Support Division also flew in the area to help with the search.
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team has volunteers responding to assist in the search.
