SUBMITTED PHOTO - Walmart announced Friday that it will close 269 stores in the U.S. and abroad, including the Neighborhood Market on Jean Road in Lake Oswego.Walmart’s Neighborhood Market on Jean Road in Lake Oswego is among 269 stores that the retailer will close this year as part of a massive restructuring.

The store at 17711 Jean Way, which was originally a Nature's and then a Wild Oats market, will shut its doors on Jan. 28, the company announced Friday. Employees at the Lake Oswego location, which opened in October 2012 and employed around 90 people when fully staffed, were informed of the impending closure Friday morning.

Only one other Oregon store is on the list: a Neighborhood Market at 8235 S.W. Apple Way in Portland, which will close Sunday. Overall, the closures will affect 16,000 workers, 10,000 of them in the U.S.

“Actively managing our portfolio of assets is essential to maintaining a healthy business,” said Doug McMillon, president and CEO, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “Closing stores is never an easy decision, but it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future. It’s important to remember that we’ll open well more than 300 stores around the world next year. So we are committed to growing, but we are being disciplined about it.”

Wal-Mart said 154 locations in the U.S. will be closed, most of them small-format stores called Walmart Express, which were launched as a test program in 2011. Also among the closures: 23 Neighborhood Markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam’s Clubs. The remaining 115 locations to close are spread over Latin America, mostly in Brazil.

Walmart said it plans to focus on strengthening Supercenters, optimizing Neighborhood Markets in profitable markets, growing its e-commerce business and expanding pickup services for customers.

The company said it hopes to relocate employees to other nearby Walmart stores. Where that isn’t possible, the company said, it will provide 60 days of pay, severance in some cases and resume and interview skills training. The Lake Oswego closing will affect 64 workers, the company said, with layoffs effective as of April 15.

“The decision to close stores is difficult and we care about the associates who will be impacted,” McMillon said. “We invested considerable time assessing our stores and clubs and don’t take this lightly. We are supporting those impacted with extra pay and support, and we will take all appropriate steps to ensure they are treated well.”
