The City Council is scheduled to honor the Portland Timbers on Wednesday .
That's when the council will pass a resolution declaring Jan. 20 to be 2015 MLS Champion Portland Timber Soccer City USA Day to commemorate winning the championship last year.
The resolution includes a chronology of significant events and accomplishments in the team's Portland history. They include the March 11, 2009, passage of the council's support for the Major League Soccer franchise, the fact that the Timbers have sold out ever home game over the past five years, the Oct. 29, 2015, victory over Sporting Kansas City in an 11-round shootout, and the Dec. 6, 2015, victory over the Columbus Crew to win the title.
The "Portland City Council is grateful of the partnership between the City and the Portland Timbers and thankful to owner Merritt Paulson for his commitment to Portland and codifying our moniker as Soccer City USA," reads the resolution, which encourages city residents to observe the day.
