An Oregon City landmark closed starting this Monday, but Mike’s Drive-In at 905 Seventh St. is expected to reopen by the end of February after renovations.

By moving the walk-in coolers outside, 250 square feet was opened up for larger eating and food-ordering areas.

“We’ll be moving the restrooms and creating more dining-room space,” Freeman said. “It’s exciting to be ripping out walls and redesigning the layout of the restaurant.”

Mike Martin opened the original Mike’s Drive-In in 1971 at 47th Avenue and East Burnside Street in Portland; he opened the Milwaukie location in 1973. Freeman, who started working at the restaurant when he was 14, between his freshman and sophomore years at Milwaukie High School, purchased the business in March 1984.

Oregon City’s Mike’s Drive-In opened on Aug. 10, 1989, and the iconic exterior design of the building won’t change. Mike’s Drive-In locations in Milwaukie and Sellwood remain open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
