On Friday January 22, at 8:09 p.m., a North Precinct police officer came across a parked stolen car in the 8500 block of N.E. Milton Street in Portland.
The officer pulled over and kept an eye on it until a person got into the car and drove away. The officer was following, as the car pulled into the Madison Suites Hotel at 3620 N.E. 82nd Avenue of Roses, at which point the officer initiated a traffic stop, assisted by a Canine Unit sergeant.
The suspect backed up into the police car, which struck the officer who was outside the car. The suspect then tried to drive out of the lot, and rammed into the Canine Unit vehicle.
Unable to escape, the suspect bailed out of the stolen car and ran off, but was quickly caught and arrested after a brief area search. Officers subsequently examining the stolen car found a gun inside it. The arrested suspect was subsequently identified as 24-year-old Justin Joseph Panek.
Panek was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Assault in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree (four counts), Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Theft in the Second Degree, Theft in the Third Degree, and Driving Under the Influence -- Drugs. Panek also had two outstanding arrest warrants. Additional charges may be considered by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office. Panek's arraignment was set for January 25.
The officer first struck by Panek received a minor injury, requiring treatment at a Portland hospital. The sergeant suffered minor injuries that were treated at the scene
