Wilsonville High School’s a capella group, Soul’d Out, put on a dazzling performance Friday, Jan. 29 in front of a packed audience at Rolling Hills Church in Tualatin. Performing hit songs like Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around” and “Life isn’t Fair” from the hit television show “Glee,” Wilsonville mesmerized a crowd littered with Wildcat supporters.SPOKESMAN PHOTO: VERN UYETAKE - Wilsonville High School's Soul'd Out finished second at the ICHSA Northwest Semifinal Jan. 29.

The top 10 a cappella teams in the region joined one another for the ICHSA Northwest Seminfinal, where the top team would earn a berth in Nationals, held in New York later this year. At the end of the competition, it came down to WHS and the perennial powerhouse West Albany Rhythmix.

WHS drew the eighth slot, right in the range coach Sue Sue Schreiner was hoping for, making them the third-to-last team to perform. The Wildcats then had to anxiously await two more performances and then a series of songs from the University of Oregon’s Mind the Gap before hearing their fate.

“The scores are a combination of things, and are somewhat subjective, but the judges do a good job,” Scheiner said before the competition. “You always hope to go toward the end of the competition because you know what you’re going up against and what you have to beat.”

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the results were in. Second runner-up was announced first, going to Sherwood High School’s Mixolydians. Unfortunately for Wilsonville, Soul’d Out was announced next, making them first runner-up and meaning the team won’t make its fourth appearance in New York in the past eight years. West Albany High School, meanwhile, finished in first place.

Despite the narrow miss, this year’s regional marked another strong event host-

ed by WHS as well another impressive performance. Wilsonville High School’s Joseph Wilde highlighted Soul’d

Out’s performance, as he

was named one of two top vocal percussionists Friday night.
