Cooler temperatures, lighter wind give firefighters breathing room
Firefighters are still working diligently to contain the 33,682-acre Eagle Creek Fire, which has ravaged the Columbia River Gorge since Sept. 2.
At 7 percent containment, cooler temperatures, higher humidity and lighter wind are giving fire fighters a little breathing room, but upcoming days are expected to revert to drier and windier conditions.
Winds shifted on Friday, increasing fire activity to the east, resulting in two new Level 1 (Be Ready) evacuation notices for portions of Hood River County.
Firefighters used strategic burnout methods to protect area homes and commercial structures near Cascade Locks, about an hour east of Portland.
They continue to work along Interstate 84 and Highway 30, using heavy equipment to strengthen firelines, and avoiding fish hatcheries. Helicopters dipped water out of the Columbia River to aid firefighters and also assisted firefighters working to contain the Archer Fire in Washington.
Overnight (Friday into Saturday), firefighters saw little change in the fire perimeter near Corbett.
Firefighters expect weather conditions to be favorable on Saturday, with lower temperatures (Portland expects a high of 72), higher humidity and lighter wind.
Firefighters are emphasizing protecting structures along Interstate 84 and Highway 30, while Oregon State Fire Marshal crews complete patrols to extinguish hot spots to the east and maintain containment lines in the Cascade Locks.
Officials are making preparations for strategic burnout to protect the Corbett community, which sits on the fire's western edge, but burnout could be delayed because of moisture in the air.
