UPDATE: Motorcyclist dies in early Tuesday crash
A motorcyclist was killed in a three-vehicle crash in East Portland early Tuesday.
The victim was identified Thursday as Jeremy J. Sowa, 43, of Gresham.
Based on information learned in this crash investigation, speed is believed to be a factor.
The drivers of the other vehicles remained on the scene. One, Rory A. Morgan, 26, was arrested for DUII.
According to police, at 2:39 a.m. on Feb. 6, East Precinct officers responded to the report of three-vehicle vehicle crash involving a motorcycle near the intersection of Southeast 141st Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard.
When officers and emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene, the found the victim and motorcycle on the roadway. Responding officers also located a dark colored truck and a red sedan that were involved in the crash nearby.
Emergency medical responders determined the adult male motorcycle operator was deceased.
The Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team responded to the crash scene to continue this investigation. Criminalists with the Forensic Evidence Division also responded to the scene.
Based on preliminary information, officers believe the operator of a Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Powell. Witnesses told officers that prior to the crash, the motorcycle operator was traveling at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles and traveling into the oncoming lane of traffic.
When the motorcycle operator arrived at Powell and 141st, he crashed into a GMC pick-up that was turning southbound onto 141st from westbound Powell. The motorcycle operator was ejected from the motorcycle and, after landing on the ground, was struck by a red Ford sedan driven by Morgan that was traveling westbound on Powell.
Powell was closed to vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic form Southeast 138th Avenue to Southeast 144th Avenue for the several hours as the investigation continued.
This is the third traffic crash related fatality investigated by the Major Crash Team in 2018.
