Two car chases later, police take elusive driver into custody
It took two low-speed car chases through the St. Johns area, but Portland police have arrested a 19-year-old man for, among other things, reckless driving and attempting to elude a police officer.
Austin Wilfong was booked Tuesday evening, July 28, into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of attempting to elude by vehicle, interfering with a peace officer, reckless driving, attempt to elude on foot and second-degree criminal mischief.
Police said Wilfong was taken into custody at about 6:30 p.m. July 28 after North Precinct officers followed him in a short traffic pursuit near Pier Park. The pursuit ended when the driver, later identified as Wilfong, ran from the vehicle and into Pier Park. The suspect tripped as he ran, and officers caught him.
Wilfong was involved in a similar chase Monday, July 27, after North Precinct officers responded to the report of a disturbance at a home in the 7100 block of North Hodge Avenue. Because of Wilfongs reckless driving and the fact that officers knew who he was, police broke off the pursuit.
