Free Milagro Theater play kicks off garbage talk
Metro is kicking off a discussion about what to do with the region's garbage with free performances of a special play, "El Tesoro: An Environmental Telenovela," produced by Milagro Theatre.
The play and other activities planned by Metro are intended to engage the public in conversations about garbage, including choices for managing it in the future. The Metro Council is scheduled to make decisions in the next few years regarding where the region's garbage will go and how it will be handled. Among other things, the council must decide whether to renew the contract for the landfill that accepts much of the region's garbage in Eastern Oregon.
Metros Lets Talk Trash event series begins on Saturday, May 10, with the premiere of the Milagro Theatre play. It chronicles the discoveries of a newlywed couple, Alex and Monica, who are struggling to pay for their wedding and furnishings for their newly shared home. They eventually learn to look at discards in a different way.
The half-hour production will be conducted in both English and Spanish, and will include post-show discussions led by Metro staff members.
El Tesoro was written by Olga Sanchez, Milagros artistic director. The play is directed by Alida Holguín Wilson-Gunn, Milagros associate artistic director, and features a cast of talented bilingual actors that include Vicente Guzman, Julieth Maya Buri, Elizabeth Romero and Ajai Terrazas Tripathi.
