King City man killed while riding motorcycle

Vehicle driven by teenager with learner's permit strikes Dale Smith

Dale Smith, a 66-year-old King City man riding a motorcycle near Sherwood, was killed Sept. 27 when a teenage driver swerved into him.

Washington County sheriff's deputies responded at 7:16 p.m. near the intersection of Southwest Roy Rogers Road and Scholls-Sherwood Road concerning a crash where a vehicle and a motorcyclist had collided.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, they learned that a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 15-year-old Taylor Rutherford from Hubbard had been traveling south on Roy Rogers Road south of the Scholls-Sherwood intersection.

The Suburban veered onto the right shoulder, lost control and then crossed the centerline. When the Suburban crossed into oncoming traffic, it collided with a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling in the opposite direction.

Dale Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Taylor Rutherford was driving with a valid Oregon instruction permit at the time of the crash, and there was a licensed driver and another passenger in her vehicle; none were injured.

Members from the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to assist with the investigation, and Roy Rogers Road was closed to traffic for about four hours.

The completed investigation will be forwarded to the Washington County District Attorney's Office for review.
