September is time to start obeying school zone rules
Soon the beginning of school will be here, and that means school buses and kids will be back on the streets.
So, as a refresher to some basic rules when you are out driving:
-- When you approach a school bus with red flashing lights activated while it is loading or discharging our children, drivers must stop and wait until the children are clear and the bus has deactivated the red flashing lights and the front bar has been raised back up.
Drivers should be aware that failure to stop and wait can result in a hefty ticket.
-- Be alert of children waiting along the side of the street or road for their school bus, especially along Fischer Road and 131st Avenue.
-- Be aware of the school zone flashing lights, both in the morning and afternoon hours. When flashing, the speed limit is 20 mph.
This traffic law is strictly enforced.
-- If you see a strange vehicle or person following or soliciting school children, call 9-1-1 and request an officer to check out the situation.
Always get a description and license plate if possible.
We all want our children and grandchildren to be safe and enjoy the school experience.
