School board chairwoman thanks district patrons

To the Editor:

The beginning of a new year gives us a chance to reflect on the events of the prior year and what we plan to accomplish in the coming months.

As a school district, we are not yet at our midpoint, but the season still provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect, plan and especially say thank you!

With your support, the Tigard-Tualatin School District successfully passed a $20 million bond in May 2011.

Over the summer we completed the roofing project at Hazelbrook Middle School and replaced tracks at Fowler and Twality middle schools. Taking advantage of the winter break, both high school auditoriums were upgraded with carpet at Tualatin and seating improvements at Tigard.

We are targeting summer 2012 to begin the roof replacement at Tualatin High School as well as several energy efficiency/HVAC projects. Tigard High will see its parking area improved and a new track in place.

Projects at our elementary schools will also be underway.

We are very grateful for the bond dollars directed towards text books and technology. Many of our teachers are engaging students with new and innovative tools that will expand to more classrooms next fall.

Finally, we will launch a new online school, connecting with many of the youth in our community who seek this kind of educational opportunity.

Today there are many challenges in public education. With your continued support, our exceptional staff is able to leverage the opportunities for our students.

Thank you for your commitment to public education.
