T-Bone crash shuts down SE Powell Blvd during rush hour

All it took was bad timing by the driver of a red Toyota SUV to be T-boned by a silver Acura on westbound S.E. Powell Boulevard at 12th Avenue at about 5:20 pm – during rush hour on September 9.

“It looked like the Toyota was trying to ‘slip through’ traffic stopped for the light [at S.E. Milwaukie Avenue],” said Michael Jenkins, who was enjoying the afternoon sun outside Southeast Grind coffee shop.

A Portland Police Bureau officer at the scene concurred. “From what we can tell, the Acura was traveling westbound in the far right-hand lane – the ‘right turn-only’ lane – on S.E. Powell; the Toyota had been going eastbound, and was attempting to turn north on S.E. 12th Avenue.”

by: DAVID F. ASHTON - Westbound S.E. Powell Boulevard traffic comes to a stop, while first-responders check for injured people at this accident scene.Drivers of vehicles in the two main westbound traffic lanes left a narrow “alley” for the Toyota to drive through, the officer said – when it was struck by the oncoming Acura.

“Medics strapped the driver of the Toyota on a board, Jenkins said. “But it left slowly, without using its lights and siren.” That’s an indication the patient was not seriously injured in the violent mishap. There’s no word on whether the Acura driver received a citation for causing the crash.
