Forecasters find little winter guidance

by: ERIC NORBERG - Winter 2012-13 HighlightsAt the 20th annual “What Will Winter Be Like” meeting of the Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorological Society, held in the OMSI auditorium just north of the Ross Island Bridge on November 17th, there seemed little data to help the predictions. Those who use previous “analog years” as a guide didn’t really find any in the past century; those who rely on sunspots looked for a La Nina wet winter, although the La Nina has actually vanished in the Eastern Pacific. The only consensus was that it probably will be “sorta average”. In the photo shown here, Cleveland High graduate and former KGW meteorologist Jim Little lays out the conundrum. Expect anything – or nothing – this year!
