by: COURTESY OF DESMOND MOORE - The impact from the collision with a utility pole injured the driver, and killed the passenger, at Division and S.E. 42nd.An early morning high-speed trip eastbound on S.E. Division Street ended tragically, early Wednesday morning, January 23, when the driver slammed his 2007 Mazda 3 into a utility pole so hard at S.E. 42nd Avenue, it snapped like a twig.

When responding Portland Police East Precinct officers rolled up to the scene at 1:27 am, they saw that the pole apparently had deeply intruded into the car’s passenger side.

“The passenger, a 37-year-old male, died at the scene,” said PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson.

The driver, later identified as 49-year-old John Edward Martin of Southeast Portland, was taken to a Portland hospital what Simpson described as “non-life-threatening injuries” – and later arrested at 5 am.

“The driver was charged with Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Reckless Driving, and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII),” stated Simpson. Martin was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center at Jail at 7:49 am, and remains in custody with combined bail set at $255,000.
