by: COURTESY OF TONI KARTNER - CHS WrestlersCleveland High retained its First Place status at the PIL Wrestling Championships, held January 10-11th at Marshall High School. Toni Kartner, who provided this team photo, reports that “There were standout performances this year with six first places: Joe Lwin at 113 lbs, Ahmed Yusuf at 132 lbs, Tyler Garrison at 145 lbs, Yadnel Ayala at 152 lbs, Kyle Hammond at 160 lbs, and Keegan Hammond at 182 lbs.

“The CHS Wrestling program is led by Coach Jeff Zerba and a dedicated team of volunteer coaches. The tournament included all Portland Public Schools: Benson, Cleveland, Franklin, Grant, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Roosevelt, and Wilson. Wilson came in second and Roosevelt third.” She added, “PPS has cut extracurricular budgets to the bone, but Cleveland’s coaching staff has built champions on a shoestring budget.”
