'Dreadlock choker' arrested for that ... and then for DUII

It was a most unusual a domestic assault call – the report of a woman being choked by her boyfriend, using his dreadlocks – to which Portland Police Bureau (PPB) responded at 2:28 am on January 7.

When Central Precinct officers responded to the address on S.E. 22nd Avenue, just north of S.E. Powell Boulevard, they didn’t know quite what to expect.

He was later re-arrested, after release from his first arrest, on a DUII charge.“An adult female victim told police that her boyfriend assaulted her, and choked her with his dread-locked hair,” explained PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Peter Simpson. “The victim provided a good description of the suspect, and officers canvassing the neighborhood located the man and took him into custody.”

While the victim was getting treatment at a Portland hospital for “numerous, non-life-threatening injuries”, Simpson said they were booking 32-year-old Caleb Grotberg into jail.

“Grotberg was charged with Kidnap in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Assault in the Fourth Degree, Menacing, and Strangulation; all Domestic Violence felony crimes,” reported Simpson.

Although Grotberg was held in Multnomah County Inverness Jail on more than $250,000 bail, he was apparently released from custody.

But Multnomah County Detention Center records show that Grotberg was re-arrested on two weeks later, on January 23, at 2:06 pm, this time charged with Driving under the Influence of Intoxicants.

“There are 24-hour resources and support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence available,” Simpson reminded victims. “Call the Portland Women's Crisis Line at 503/235-5333.”
