Grinding T-bone crash startles neighbors on SE 52nd

by: DAVID F. ASHTON - The VW Jettas driver, who drove into the side of the Honda, tries to open the hood of his car.Minutes after it occurred – and before emergency responders arrived – the sound of a car wreck in the intersection of S.E. 52nd Avenue and Flavel Drive had drawn a crowd of neighbors. It was about 5:10 pm. on May 14th, in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood. The intersection is just below the peak of a hill on 52nd.

Witnesses at the scene told THE BEE that a black 1998 VW Jetta GL had “T-boned” a black 1997 Honda Accord LX, pushing it eastward into a third vehicle that had been stopped at the intersection.

All persons involved in the wreck exited their vehicles, and were surveying the damage, when Portland East Precinct Officers rolled up to the scene to check on them and to direct traffic.

“The car stopped at the intersection was able to drive off, after exchanging information,” PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson later told THE BEE. The other cars were towed.

“No medical aid was required,” Simpson added, “and no citations were issued.” Non-injury auto accidents have not been citable offenses for many years in Portland; insurance companies are left to resolve matters.
