by: DAVID F. ASHTON - Boy Scouts of America Troop 64 members Caleb Walcott and Zachary Armstrong are joined their Scoutmaster, Tom Gustafson, as they are honored for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Many youngsters become Boy Scouts – but a select very few have the “right stuff” to become Eagle Scouts.

“It takes a lot of work, dedication, and perseverance to become an Eagle Scout,” Scoutmaster Tom Gustafson told THE BEE at the June 10 induction ceremony at Moreland Presbyterian Church.

“So few Scouts make it this far,” Gustafson reflected. “We’re glad that they felt it was important to make this effort, and we’re very proud that Zachary Armstrong and Caleb Walcott are entering the Eagle Court of Honor.”

Zachary “Zach” Armstrong’s culminating project to finish earning the rank was removing invasive species from along Johnson Creek It was a two-day effort, removing about 40 yards of blackberry bushes and planting native plant species.

“Scouting teaches you a lot of good life skills,” Armstrong said. “Even if someone doesn’t work on getting merit badges, there are a lot of good times, and a lot of good people in the Scout program. It gives you a lot of good memories. It’s worth the time investment.”

About being named an Eagle Scout, Armstrong said, “It’s been hard, but it’s worth it. It’s been long journey but it feels good.”

Caleb Walcott chose to build five Japanese-style benches for his school as his final Eagle Scout project. “When we went to place the benches around, the weather took a turn for the worse, and we were ‘blessed’ with the rainiest day in the fall.”

About his experience, Walcott said, “Scouting has taught me to be a better person, and a better member of the community. I haven’t ‘helped any old ladies across the street’, but I've been able to help in the community through a number of service projects.”

Sharing his thoughts, just before the induction ceremony, Walcott said, “I am extremely proud to have reached this rank. There are so few people who become Eagle Scouts.”
