'Savory Spice Shop' opens in Southeast

by: RITA A. LEONARD - Anne and Jim Brown have opened a 'Savory Spice Shop' across S.E. 13th Avenue from the Sellwood-Moreland Branch Library.A new local shop in a national franchise, “Savory Spice Shop”, opened at 7857 S.E. 13th Avenue in late September – locally-owned and operated by Jim and Anne Brown. They offer over 400 fresh ground herbs, spices, and hand-crafted seasonings, as well as organic selections, fragrant gift sets, and extracts. Their goal, they tell THE BEE, is to “support a universal love and passion for food and cooking by providing high quality spices and cooking supplies at accessible prices”.

Jim Brown advises, "We urge customers to ‘taste what you want and buy what you need’. We encourage you to sample our products on-site, from taster jars. We can prepare them in the amounts you need, starting at as little as a half ounce. We strive to remain innovative, fun, and inspiring – providing an educational environment for customers who share a love of food and cooking."

“Savory Spice Shops” was founded in Denver by spice experts Mike and Janet Johnston, who prepare and ship their products weekly to maintain freshness. “We're the first ‘Savory Spice Shop’ in the Portland area,” says Jim. “We’re eager to share our love of food and creative cooking with the community. We’ll depend on customer feedback to stock popular spice blends, all free of M.S.G.

“We plan to partner with local chefs – hosting demonstrations to showcase new ways to enhance food enjoyment. We'll also carry in stock some books and recipes for preparing food and drink.”

Following a complete remodel of the 1,400-square-foot shop’s space, Brown plans to focus on service, education, and sharing ideas with local foodies. “We want to introduce our customers to new spice blends that please the palate,” says Brown. “We want them to smell and taste our products, and decide the exact blends that will work for them.”

The shop’s telephone number is 503/928-3099. It’s directly across the street from the Sellwood-Moreland Branch Library at Bidwell on S.E. 13th.
