by: DAVID F. ASHTON - The annual Sellwood Middle School's ' Run and Walk for Education' was again afoot on October 21.Lots of people got up early, on Sunday morning, October 21, to participate in the “5K Run and Walk for Education” benefitting, in part, Sellwood Middle School (SMS).

While the athletes warmed up, they were put in a festive mood with music by the SMS Band and the school’s famous Marimba Band.

“This event is important,” said Jackie Dirks, Chair of the Sellwood Middle School Foundation, “because all the proceeds go to support the work of our foundation – and in part – all Portland Public Schools’ Foundation, and ‘All Hands Raised’.”

At Sellwood Middle School in particular, Dirks said the funds provide support for the school’s elective classes and programs.”

Principal Charlene Russell looked pleased, as she surveyed the activity in her school’s playground.

“This is one my favorite days of the year,” Russell confided. “It's wonderful to see the community come out to support our school. All generations of neighbors are coming here, to help their local schools.”

In addition to fundraising, Russell commented, “This is a healthy activity that draws together lots of people who get to see our facility, and to see the types of children’s’ activities we provide – like our musical programs.”

Russell especially commended the volunteers who help at the school, and who help arrange this fund-raiser. “Some of our volunteers have been working for almost a year to get together all of this – all of the equipment, and our thirty sponsors. In this day and age, we are appreciative of all the financial support this provides.”

In all, the volunteers were expecting they’d raise about $10,000 from this year’s 5K Run.
