Gas station collects blankets and socks for the Holidays

by: ELIZABETH USSHER GROFF - This .year's new Holiday blanket and sock drive at the Woodstock Shell Station is spear-headed by Service Manager DJ Alex (right). Also shown, from left, are Efren Fonseca, Tim Ballando, new owner Tyler Jakes, and Eduardo Fonseca.Tyler Jakes bought the Shell Station at 4228 S.E. Woodstock Boulevard eighteen months ago, and says the changes he has made have brought positive feedback and happier customers. The changes he lists are competitive gas prices, availability of propane, shuttle service for repair customers, new shop equipment, and fresh paint.

However, one more change he’s made, for the month of December, is a blanket and sock drive. Organized by Service Manager DJ Alex, who started working at the station two months ago, this collection of clean or new blankets and socks will lead to distribution to downtown shelters for the homeless.

Service manager Alex, who uses her own years of experience in the automotive business to help keep the station and automotive shop running smoothly, says she found a blue plastic rain barrel on Craigslist that she hopes will be full of clean blankets and socks in time for the Holidays. The barrel will be outside the office during the day seven days a week.

Of the services now offered at the gas station, Jakes tells THE BEE that Tim Ballando, a Brentwood-Darlington resident and a certified Master Mechanic, is now on hand at the gas station to provide full automotive service. His 35 years of experience as an ASE (Automotive Services Excellence) mechanic enables him to take on many jobs, he adds.

Eduardo Fonseca, who has been pumping gas at the station for fourteen years, has stayed on by popular customer demand, and shares pump work with his nephew Efren Fonseca.
