Lighting Sellwood-Westmoreland community tree still a family tradition

Despite the wet weather, the Hainley and Heiberg families again recruited volunteers fror the Saturday before Thanksgiving Day to light up the SMILE-sponsored “Community Christmas Tree” on the Bybee-13th curve by Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial, above Oaks Bottom.

“This is a tradition,” Genevieve Hainley told THE BEE. “We love having this in our neighborhood. People from across the river say they enjoy seeing the tree lit up every year; and I like it because I can see it from my house!”

by: DAVID F. ASHTON - The Sellwood-Westmoreland annual tree is again lit, on the bluff overlooking Oaks Bottom! Some 20 volunteers braved pouring rain, arriving at nine o'clock in the morning on November 17. The rain had lightened up to a sprinkle by the time they were half done trimming the giant tree, however.

SMILE, the Sellwood-Moreland Improvement League neighborhood association, which is responsible for the project, gave special thanks to Blue Kangaroo Coffee, Starbucks Coffee, Grand Central Baking, Smith Crane, Heiberg Garbage and Recycling – and especially to Wilhelm's Portland Funeral Home, which is donating the electricity again this year.
