by: RITA A. LEONARD - Marci Pelletier, owner of Shwop recycled clothing, recently moved her store from Woodstock to Brooklyn, on S.E. Powell Boulevard.“Shwop”, which originated in a space under Laughing Planet Restaurant on Woodstock Boulevard as a unique membership-based recycled clothing boutique, has proven so successful it needed more space. So, it has changed boulevards, and is now located in the Brooklyn neighborhood on Powell.

Owner Marci Pelletier explains, "We’ve more than tripled our retail area, and now carry children’s and men’s wear, in addition to women’s clothing. We reopened in April at 2419 S.E. Powell Boulevard – with lots of display windows, and our own parking lot. We’re happy to have all our stock under one roof.”

The eye-catching chartreuse green building formerly housed Frank’s Floor Covering store, and it has 3,000 square feet of showroom. There are three dressing rooms, two bathrooms, and lots of upstairs storage.

“We’re still remodeling, adding shelving, fixtures, and a kids’ play area,” says Marci. “My husband is an artist, and his paintings and sculpture will decorate the shop. Our color scheme is the same color green as is used in our logo.

“Our stock of women’s clothing, shoes & vintage jewelry is already on display, and we’ve added a maternity section. Currently we're sorting and organizing the men’s and children’s wear. Generally, seasonal styles are most popular. Right now we're selling lots of summer dresses, and shorts for men and children. I like our new view of Powell Park. I was getting tired of working out of a basement location.”

While they’re still setting up, Shwop is open Tuesday through Friday, noon to 6 pm, Saturdays 10-6, and Sundays noon to 4pm, but Pelletier has plans to continue to expand her hours as well as her stock.
