Parade Day at Duniway marks end of school

by: DAVID F. ASHTON - This big beast, brought to the parade by Northwest Dragon & Lion Dance Association, curls up as it chases the Pearl of Wisdom.Mother Nature always seems to smile on the Annual Duniway Elementary School Parade. Dark morning clouds on May 31 over Eastmoreland made way for afternoon sunshine, as excited kids prepared for the big event, which marks the completion of the school year.

This year, the school’s mascot, the Duniway Dragon, was well-represented -- with both a student-made and student-operated beast, and a professional dragon [shown] as well.

It’s the culmination of the year,” said parade organizer Michelle Alberts. “This is a fun event, everyone has a good time, and we always have sunshine!”

At 2 pm, Engine 20 from the Westmoreland Fire Station rang its bell and sounded its siren, and led the procession – north on S.E. Reed College Place to Woodstock Boulevard, and then back south to the school.
