by: RITA A. LEONARD - Staci Hillman and Roxanne Borras in early June opened Hooray Haroo, a childrens boutique, in Sellwood.A colorful new children's boutique celebrated its Grand Opening on June 7 in Sellwood. “Hooray Haroo”, at 8235 S.E. 13th Avenue, has set up in the space formerly occupied by Camp Hollyhock, which has since moved to Westmoreland.

The new business features handmade clothing and accessories created by local designers. Clothing is targeted for boys and girls, from infants to age 8. Stock also includes toys and artwork.

Owners Roxanne Borras and Staci Hillman have created children’s clothing for seven years, but had been selling it at fairs and bazaars, and at the Portland Saturday Market. Now they’re doing it from their own store. Its quirky name means, the duo explain, “a shortened form of ‘how are you?’, or an exclamation of happiness”. The business displays handmade items from some fifteen seamstresses.

The Grand Opening drew many interested visitors, in spite of being held during the Rose Festival. “We offered storytime, snacks, and a clothing raffle,” said Borras. “We were pleased to introduce our specialty lines to shoppers along Sellwood’s Antique Row.”

So far, the popular items in the shop include “fancy prancy” leggings, tutu dresses, tops, and blazers – including “Dolly in my Pocket”, and a Serendipity dress created in a “grow-with-me” style. Shoes, hair accessories, and soft toys add to the colorful mix.

“Hooray Haroo” can be found on Facebook and Pinterest. Or visit the shop in person – Wednesdays through Fridays, 11 am-5:30 pm, Saturdays 11 am-6 pm, and Sundays 11 am-4:30 pm. Phone 503/367-7881 for more information.
